Wake Up as Yourself

Why am I the one who always has to care?
Did you know I once saw the tortoise lose to the hare
If you really only need love then share.

This place is confusing and I don't have footing
Where do you go to be free? Nothing is free
but you're free to be you and I'm free to be me.

Alice never fell in and with Max ate a ham
What if the boy had left the dam?
Are you really who you are? Am I really who I am?

A wise man once said people are strange, rightfully so
But who decides what's wrong or right? Lives, dies, evolves, or fights?
Don't close your eyes or it's out of sight.

If I had just told Humpty not to sit on the wall
Or could tell the children to not fall
No one can really help them all.

People are people and one is not all
The world will keep turning as winter follows fall
Use your eyes, heart, and mind
And please by all means be your own kind
The passion and creativity is waiting for you there
Be sure to open your eyes, but try not to stare.

  1. Cole, i like this a lot. it remind me of Dr. Seuss in a green eggs and ham kind of way for some odd reason.

my favorite lines are the end. you ended strongly:
" People are people and one is not all
The world will keep turning and winter follows fall"

i was thinking you could say "as winter follows fall" making the line flow. But, you may have another agenda in mind for that line so i don't know. also, i love the allusions to Humpty and all. You could even add a few more like the been stalk story etc... good job

  2. This was my favorite piece of yours. I loved the illusions to the childhood stories. I’m not sure I understood the whole thing but that’s why I liked it. It kept me thinking.

  3. Cole,
This poem was very interesting. I enjoyed reading it. Very imaginative. it's fun how you came played with children's stories. No changes to this work that I can note. Good job

  4. Such a playful tone. This poem is alot of fun to read. It definitely reminds me of Dr. Seuss. The last line reads, "Be sure to open your eyes, but try not to stare." Makes me think that this poem is life lessons given as a child but with an adult realization or twist. I love this poem! Great job.
